Joint statement issued 10 March 2010 by the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Jewish Leadership Council
We are encouraged that the Prime Minister has fully acknowledged the serious concerns that exist about the current abuse of the principles of Universal Jurisdiction, and that he has unequivocally stated that the Government intends to legislate to resolve the current anomaly in the law.
However, we are disappointed at the additional delay, particularly when the case for change has long been recognised by the Government, and is so overwhelming.
We will fully engage in this new round of consultation and scrutiny as set out by the Secretary of State for Justice, but once this process has concluded political leaders must deliver on their commitment to legislate.

The British Jewish Community is deeply saddened by the situation in Haiti, a natural disaster of tragic proportions, resulting in a shocking number of fatalities and unimaginable damage to the country's infrastructure. On behalf of the British Jewish community, the President of the Board of Deputies, Vivian Wineman, sends heartfelt condolences to the families of the tens of thousands who have lost their lives. The leadership of the United Synagogue, Masorti, Liberal and Reform Movements join us in these sentiments.
The situation is worsening and those who wish to support aid efforts are directed to the disaster appeal being run by World Jewish Relief. WJR is working with trusted partners on the ground to provide food, health care and shelter to the victims of this disaster. More details can be found on www.wjr.org.uk.
